Sawbones! Welcome to South Africa. Famed for its stunning coastline, excellent vineyards, modern cityscape and the unparalleled beauty of Table Mountain, Cape Town is one of Africa’s most exciting cities.

Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6pm on Day 1. This is a necessary meeting to collect insurance and next of kin details.

The evening is yours to sample the heady delights of the Mother City. Head to the city centre for 5 star restaurants and funky bars, drive out to Constantia for a vineyard tour or watch the sun go down over the ocean with a cocktail at Camps Bay.

Please Note: Table Mountain cable car will be closed due to routine maintenance from 8th July to 18th August 2019. You will still be able to access the top of Table Mountain by the steep hiking trail, we also recommend using a local guide. Your Leader or hotel reception will be able to assist with arrangements.

Day 4
Fish River Canyon, Namibia

On the journey to Fish River Canyon, the landscape becomes more desert-like. Fish River Canyon is the Grand Canyon of Africa. Sheer sandstone cliffs drop down into a 500-metre deep valley. This coastal town surrounded by dunes faces the pounding waves of the Atlantic. There is a quaint seaside feel to the laid back town. It is the ideal place to stop and recharge. Visit the pier, relax on the beach, sample German beer and dumplings or visit the infamous lighthouse and museum.

Swakopmund is the outdoor adventure sports mecca of Namibia, try dune surfing, skydiving, quad biking or take a hair raising trip in a 4×4 over the dunes. These off the wall activities are guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping. It’s important to check with your leader if you are unsure about the safety of any of these options.

Keen to get out of town but not into adventure sports? Try horse riding at the Okakambe Trails or visit the Camel Farm.

The Atlantic Coast of Namibia is also known as the Skeleton Coast, a vast uninhabited coastline populated by shipwrecks, whalebones and thousands of seals. Take a trip to Cape Cross for the mesmerising sight of these seals. The sea and beach literally teem with life while you hear the cacophony of seabirds that visit here.

Spitzkoppe rises from the desert in stark contrast to the flat plains that surround it. An 800-metre mountain carved from the earth by harsh winds. This is Namibia’s Matterhorn, a rugged wild place seen by few. Explore Spitzkoppe on foot. Hike to the bushman paintings or take a guided stroll to discover the natural flora and fauna, many of which are native only to this region.

Day 11
Etosha National Park, Namibia

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

One of the Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls is the largest waterfall in the world. A staggering curtain of water that cascades 108 metres into a narrow gorge below. In the wet season, the spray created can rise up an incredible 400 metres and the falls become an impressive raging torrent. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit this dream destination in the heart of Africa.

You will spend 3 days at Victoria Falls. Visit the falls* and cross the bridges from Zimbabwe to Zambia. Take a helicopter flight** (12 minutes or 25 minutes), white water raft in the Zambezi or bungee jump across the gorge. Visit the Devil’s Pool, a natural infinity pool where you can look over the edge of the falls into the void below.

Sounds a bit too hair-raising? Try a sunset cruise along the Zambezi or have a glass of wine in one of many restaurants or hotels with a view.

A day in the life of Bulawayo - Southern Eye

Today we visit the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust. Here you can learn about the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife, human-wildlife conflict and anti-poaching efforts. You can also meet the rescued or orphaned animals currently in their care.

Bulawayo, known locally as the ‘City of Kings’ is Zimbabwe’s second largest city. Bulawayo has wide streets, colonial buildings and a laid back charm that makes it the perfect place to stop and recuperate. Take the afternoon to explore this historic city. There are many fascinating shops, upmarket restaurants and cafés.

Enjoy the day exploring Bulawayo, or take an optional safari to Matobo National Park. This is the land of the rhino and the Matobo fiercely protects the increasingly endangered animals from illegal poachers. Rangers will take you on a walking safari to track black and white rhinoceros. The park is full of game, so whilst rhinos are the main attraction, the walking safari is a fantastic chance to learn about tracking animals, and spotting rarer and less visible game on foot.

This area has great spiritual and cultural significance to the local people and there are many sites within the park where important ceremonies still take place.

This colonial settlement – the oldest in Zimbabwe – is the perfect base from which to explore the Great Zimbabwe Ruins. The ruined city, now a World Heritage site, was first constructed in the 11th century. It’s thought to be the former royal palace of the Zimbabwean monarch. Spend a few hours exploring this intriguing site before heading off to camp.

South Luangwa National Park is a surreal idyll. The baobab trees line the sweeping Luangwa River with its wide sandy tributaries. Elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and lions visit the river to drink and bathe. The extremely rare African Wild Dog and Thornicroft are found here. Winding trails lead through the forests where over 400 species of birds reside.

A great way to experience South Luangwa and its beautiful scenery is to take an optional river trip – ask your leader for more details.

South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Luangwa has one of the largest numbers of leopards in the. Rise early for an exhilarating morning game drive. Enjoy classic savannah scenery while keeping your eyes peeled for the parks wide ranging wildlife. Midday is the hottest part of the day here, so seek refuge from the sun and return to the camp for lunch, then head out on a village walk for a snapshot of daily life in the local community.

Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s biggest port city, a frenetic, lively place that merges modern living with traditional customs. Kitenge clad mama’s greet dhow fishing boats each morning on the sandy beaches. At the same time the expats and city dwellers head home from trendy bars. It’s tropical climate tempered with cool sea breeze gives it a laid back charm less typical of Africa’s other cities.

Travel to Dar’s Kipepeo Beach, a white sand paradise on the edge of the Indian Ocean.

Zanzibar, the sensuous island of spices, idyllic beaches, winding cobblestone alleyways and fragrant bazaars. A place rooted in history, its crystal clear waters, swaying palms and proliferation of thatched beach bars seem a world away from its dark past.

Zanzibar’s capital, Stone Town, is an enticing mix of vibrant markets, shops, mosques, palaces and courtyards. Explore it’s maze of tiny cobbled alleys. Wind past ramshackle buildings that hiding curio shops and secret coffee houses. This is a place best explored on foot.

As the sun sets head to a beachfront bar and watch for dolphins as you sip a cool beer and enjoy freshly caught fish.

Spend two days on the white sands and sparkling blue seas of the northern beaches. This is the Indian Ocean at its best, whale watch from the shore or take to the sea for an indescribable underwater world of tropical fish, brightly coloured coral and large pelagics.

‘Pole Pole’ as the locals say, ‘slowly slowly’, nothing is rushed on Zanzibar, you are as welcome to spend the day watching dhows bob across the ocean or snooze the day away in a hammock.

During this time there is an optional tour of the spice plantations. Zanzibar has grown spices such as cinnamon, ginger and vanilla for 100’s of years. Learn all about the history of the trade that made Zanzibar such a hot commodity over the centuries. Sample tea made with spices.

If your fitness level is excellent, and you are attracted to trekking through dense forests to see mountain gorillas and travelling long distances with nothing to see but a never-ending landscape, then an adventure tour is for you.

What does a typical day look like?

Every day on an adventure tour will give you a new and exciting experience. You will learn fantastic things, like cooking scrumptious meals over a campfire and setting up camp if you don’t know how to do so already.

What you can expect from a camping or accommodated overland tour is an early morning wake up call. You’ll enjoy the breathtaking sights of an African sunrise while sipping on a warm cup of tea or coffee. You’ll have some breakfast before packing up the campsite or checking out of your accommodation if you’ve chosen the comfort traveller package. We’ll then hit the road as a tour group, where you can see the best of nature that Africa has to offer.
