Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi, Kenya

Upon your arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you will be met by the guides and transported to your hotel.

Day 2: Amboseli National Park, Kenya

We will have breakfast and then travel to the Karen Blixen Museum which is a beautiful and historic farmhouse where the author of ‘Out of Africa’ lived. She was forced to leave Kenya after several personal tragedies. Then we head to the Giraffe Centre and the Daphne Sheldrick Animal Orphanage where baby animals are rehabilitated. You can enjoy watching them taking mud baths and maybe even touch them.  Afterwards we will have lunch and then take a drive to Amboseli National Park.

Day 3: Amboseli National Park, Kenya

We will have a full day of driving enjoying spotting wildlife in one of Kenya’s most famous parks known for its elephant bulls that have huge tusks that are amazing to see. In the distance is the picturesque Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 4: Amboseli – Arusha, Tanzania

We will enjoy a leisurely breakfast and then travel to the border before arriving at Arusha. We will pass Marunga waterfalls on a fairly strenuous walk. Be sure to have sturdy shoes and you will need a good level of fitness. Then it is on to Arusha via Moshi, the entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park.

Day 5: Arusha – Tarangire National Park

We will have a full day of driving today, enjoying the amazing views of the Masai Steppe and mountains. Tarangire has big herds of 30 000 elephants, 25 000 wildebeests and 30 000 zebra that migrate in a cyclical pattern which can be seen depending on seasonal changes.

Day 6: Karatu

After breakfast, you will be collected from the hotel and set off towards Lake Manyara National Park. At the north-western corner of Lake Manyara, a crystalline soda lake at the foot of the Great Rift Valley’s western escarpment, is a spectacular reserve. The park is not only known for its large flocks of flamingos, but also for its elusive tree-climbing lions.

Day 7: Karatu

After breakfast, we go to the market and visit a Chagga family that produces banana beer in Mto-wa-Mbu to learn about the culture of the area.

On the way, your guide will introduce you to the various fruits and vegetables growing in the area and explain the irrigation system that sustains local crops.

A delicious, home-cooked meal in a local Mama’s home is followed by a cultural encounter in a Maasai Boma.

Known for their distinctive traditional clothing and semi-nomadic lifestyle, the Maasai tribe is semi-nomadic herders.

We take a walking tour to Lake Papyrus in the late afternoon. This lake is full of abundant birdlife and hippos and is a great place for travelers to enjoy.

We can do some light trekking to the waterfall if time permits. On this tour, you’ll see the lake on top of the Rift valley wall; then, you’ll visit a banana plantation and rice field, and end with a visit to a village. We return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Seronera, Ngorongoro Crater

We will leave early this morning to enjoy a game drive in the very famous Ngorongoro Crater. This is an amazing wildlife experience and a highlight of the safari. You will find the ‘Big 5’ here, as well as a small population of endangered black rhinos. Enjoy a picnic lunch before heading off for the Serengeti southern plains. The terrain has grass savannahs that stretch on for miles with rocky outcrops that make this area unique.

Day 9: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

We will be exploring the Seronera area of the Serengeti which is the most central and easily accessible region of the Serengeti. It is also where the headquarters are based and where the larger lodges are located. Expect open plains of grasslands with plenty of wildlife to see.

Day 10: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

We have more time to explore the beauty of the Serengeti National Park as we will leave early and have packed lunches along the way. We will arrive back at our accommodation in the late afternoon.

Day 11: Lake Victoria, Tanzania

We will have breakfast and then make our way to Lake Victoria, passing the villages of the Sukuma tribe. This rural tribe still make a living by farming the land and grow nuts, sorghum, cassava and  farm livestock. You will be able to relax in the afternoon, or do some birdwatching along the lake shore.

Day 12: Lake Victoria – Masai Mara, Tanzania

We start our day off by going on a boat excursion which will take us to local fishing villages. We travel north to the Kenyan border and the amazing Masai Mara National Park. We meet another tribe, the Masai tribe who still farm cattle in this area. The area is made up of riverine forests, acacia forests and open plains of the savannah.

Day 13: Masai Mara National Reserve, Tanzania

Day 14: Masai Mara – Nairobi, Kenya

We start our journey to Nairobi today after breakfast. You will have free time to explore the city where you can visit the Kazuri beads centre and buy some beads. The ceramic beads are hand-made by the women and called ‘Kazuri’ which means ‘small and beautiful. Nairobi is a bustling city that is fast-paced, and typically cosmopolitan.

Travelling Times and Distances

Travelling times vary due to road conditions, border crossings, detours and weather conditions. Travelling on the roads is far different to travelling in your home country so sit back and enjoy the scenery.

The accommodation is middle of the range African standard lodges. Some of these are in National Parks, on the banks of the river, or other places of interest. You will stay in a mix of lodges, chalets and tented camps. You can enjoy en-suites and the facilities in the accommodation such as the pool and bar areas.

Meals

Most breakfasts and dinners are included on the tour and can be enjoyed in the restaurants. On some nights the guide will prepare traditional African food. Please advise us beforehand regarding special dietary requirements.
